What Boots Do You Rock?
« on: April 05, 2021, 12:34:01 PM »
I do this "review thing" on boots once a year. In essence, I want to read, as do others, on what type of boot (s) you use for work, range, hiking, patrol, etc.

I have been using for years now Belleville 8" boots with steel toes. Both winter and summer rated. I have been very happy with them although they are on the heavy side and you have to buy them from 1/2 to one full size smaller than your street shoes. They are extremely durable and that dang steel toe has saved my toes from all kinds of me dropping things - From hammers all the way up to rolling logs when cutting fire wood.

Now I want to try something new, without the steel toe and ultimately lighter. I also want something that dries out quickly which the Belleville's do not as much of the boot is leather.

Some folks like Merrells while others have suggested to me Salomon's however, they go for $260-, OUCH!

So what boot do you like, not for hard work but for hiking and patrol work? Oh, and why?

Have fun...

Johny

I still use my ASOLO Fugitive GTX boots.  They are reasonable in weight, very durable, waterproof(still need treatment periodically) and insulated though still useable in the summer.  I have been using these for years now, with my current pair being around 3 years old.

I am also a fan of Salomon boots.  I use their running shoes and lightweight "boots".

Thanks Chris!

How do the ASOLO fit? Meaning...Sizing.

My Bellvilles are 1/2 to 1 size smaller than my street shoe of 9.5-medium. My summer ones I settled with were 8.5 while the winter ones were 9.0. I spoke to Bellville about this and they actually chuckled and said, "you have to keep trying different sizes till you get the one that is snug but not tight.

Although I did it, overall it took almost a month of shipping to me then back ordering a different size till I found the ones that were right.  What a pain in the neck foot!

Lets keep this reviewing and sharing going forward for Grizz and others.  :dancingBanana:

They seem to run a little smaller to me.  I am a 10 in street/running shoes and my Asolo boots are a 10.5.  My last pair were 10s but I felt they were a little too snug if i wore anything other than thin sock "liners. That worked out fine when I was actively climbing but I prefer to use a little more of a cushioned sock now, particularly if I may be standing around for any period of time.

Got off to rocky start this year;  had to retire my Herman Survivors I bought back in 1975. Repaired and re-soled one too many times.   You know its a tough pair of boots when they last 45 years- lol. Replaced them with Lacrosse Atlas 8", which feel like I'm not wearing anything at all.  Great pair of boots, so far- though I doubt I'll get another 45 out of them. Though if I'm still wandering about at over 105 I'll give an update  ::)

Typically, I wear original SWAT boots, which for me don't need any break in period, and I wear them everywhere, i.e. work on the homestead, hiking, etc.  For long range hiking trips, I use LL Bean Gore-Tex Cresta leather hiking boots.  The LL Bean boots have been very durable and they offer excellent ankle support.  For post-apocalyptic survival trips, I'd go with the LL Bean boots.  However, they're expensive, but I'd expect to get 5-10 years wear out of one pair.  https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/14774?page=mens-gore-tex-cresta-hikers-leather&bc=474-629-506794-506795&feat=506795-GN3&csp=a&attrValue_0=Dark%20Brown&pos=4  Read the reviews, many folks are getting 10+ years of service from these boots. Supposedly, they're made in America!

Herman Survivors RB in GA. Oh my Lord. They use to be my trekking boot 50-years back. Man O' man they were great boots.

Thx Jackalope. Those like some others are in the $250- range. I guess you get what you pay for.

Okay folks, this review is going great. Lets help out Grizz and Ol' JohnyMac (Probably others) who are looking for their 2021 'kicks'.

Keep it rolling.  ;)

From personal experience and comments from others I don't trust BATES. Maybe models where they have to duplicate a military selected design but as far their own designs, they dont last long.

I buy the merrils. They make extra wide varieties as I have a wide foot. Solomon doesnt make the extra wide 4e in my size so cant wear em.  I also wear Georgia Boot varieties as they are made locally and lots of places carry them where I live. They make a good steel shank steel toed boot I wear when I need to climb my tower some. I try not to climb it if I dont have to. Id rather tilt it over. I have a ham radio tower.

Just ordered 4 pairs of Merrell Moab 2 Defense combat boots on clearance from LAPG.

I have a heavy step that wears out footwear but my Merrell shoes have held up well. My experience with Merrell footwear is completely different from Bates.

May order more boots this weeks payday to be content w current stockpile of footwear. Plan to buy a pair or two of darn tough socks every paycheck as well.

Got boots in a day ago. Barely touched them cause "LIFE" but so far impressed with quality and feel. Gonna wear around today to start the break in period.

LA Police gear clearance deals on these are gone in most sizes but they have 2 types of Oakley boots for a similar price. One desert version in a sand tan and a field assault boot avaliable in a dark coyote brown and black color scheme. Many of the sizes for those are avaliable.

Back the merrells, they don't have a side zip which I would say for a shtf boot is a plus as I always consider zips a potential failure point. And they do feel very secure on my feet.

John Mosby always said the ideal boot would be a hiking boot w 8" ankle support but at the time they didn't exist. Since then Merrell came into the game with their Moab tactical line. Also I like the 8"as it makes the boot that much more secure to my body. Hibernianson stated that patriots should study the "Lone Survivor" event seriously because a 4 man patrol from a MAG could find themselves in a situation where they are seriously oit numbered by OPFOR and too far from help. I always keep in mind how they feel off the mountain and pretty lost all their gear (medical, water, etc) including stuff strapped to their body. I'm hopefully losing boots won't be a problem in that type of situation w these.

Boots are such an incredibly personal thing.  Very dependent on mission, terrain and well, your feet.  I've come to the conclusion that I need a low and non waterproof boot, not particularly heavy duty and I am a fan of "trail runners."  This is because I live it a flat, hot and wet place.  I also strive to never be carrying more than about 30-40lbs

These are all my most recent boots.  Left to right-

Adidas Terex, those put up a good fight for about a year.  I really like them, they had the laces replaced with bungees.

Vasque Juxt: I like them but they are dying pretty fast (the Terrex got a LOT more service)

Altama OTBs- My newest.  I haven't put a ten mile loaded hike in them yet (my measure of a shoe) but they have been on my walk the dog in a weighted vest outing a few times (which involves several sprints) I'm hoping they work because I love the look.

I am incredibly picky about any shoes, so I generally stick to what I like.

Winter general use/hiking/snowshoeing- Irish Setter 800 gram Big Game Tracker- light, warm, dry, good traction in most conditions. Not sure if they even make this model anymore, but the fit of most of their boots suits me.

Summer outdoor work/patrol- Danner USMC RAT boots (Gore Tex)- you can find these cheaper now since the Corps doesn't allow them to be worn in the US, they were made for Afghanistan, so Danner has a large stock of them.

Heavy backpacking- Asolo 520's I've had several pairs of these, they generally last about 10 years of pretty heavy use. About $350, but it works out in the long run.

Extreme cold/deep snow/slush- Muck Boots Woody Max- they are very warm, but unless you have a good boot dryer, they're only good for one day because your feet will sweat, and they don't dry fast. Terrible snow traction, but I wear ice cleats with them if necessary. These are what I wear ice fishing, snowblowing, and during late muzzleloader season. I have been outside all day in sub-zero weather and my feet have never been cold in them.

I have, at times, had over 20 pairs of boots that I wore regularly. From mid-70's German tanker boots to jungle boots, all kinds of hiking boots and military boots of different types. I'd have a hard time going with just one pair, but it would probably be the Irish Setters. Just a good all-around boot that's ok in most weather conditions. We used to wear Chippewa Arctic 50's year-round when I was a carpenter, we had a local place that sold irregulars pretty cheap. Sadly, they don't make them anymore, because nothing makes you feel more invincible than lacing up a brand-new pair of them and going out for an evening of dancing and carousing.  :dancingBanana:

Actually, I wear running shoes about 75% of the time now, at work, around the house, running, and backpacking. Either Saucony or Scott, both of which I've been wearing regularly since high school. I keep a pair of season-appropriate boots in my car, and during the winter I wear a pair of Columbia light boots that I bought mostly because they were my favorite color (OD green), they turned out to be basically insulated sneakers but they're very comfortable and warm, even during the 43" snowstorm that I spent the entire night at work shoveling outside.

Boots are a great subject and with Christmas coming up what a great idea to share with the folks here your favorite boots/shoes.

Wrong right or correct, I like all, use different boots for different activities.

1) I like 8" high boots. I have girly ankles so the extra support is appreciated.
2) For just sitting there like while hunting in the colder months I use the old style LLBean rubber bottom leather upper with wool inserts. Unfortunately, LL Bean no longer makes them and the ones I have are falling apart. Looking for the same/similar boot if anybody knows what I am speaking of.
3) I wear summer steel toes Bellevilles in the summer and doing active things I use the winter ST Belleville waterproof.
4) I have also bought a new pair of ice cleats called Yaktrax Chains that a friend recommended. They will come in handy during the melt/freeze of late February and all of March.

Good subject!
