Shotgun loadout kit
« on: September 27, 2011, 08:47:46 PM »
Ken has been making me think about people who run a shotgun as their primary. What I have been wondering about is what kind of loadout these people might use.

They could run a plate carrier, with pouches for shells, an IFAK, and other shit. Pretty much what an AR/AK loadout would be, just for a scattergun.

They could also use a basic chest rig, just like the plate carrier, but without it being a plate carrier (no shit eh).

There is also the SOE 12ga Micro Rig (
). With this, though, it would be wise to run a war/pistol belt for your secondary stuff, IFAK, dump pouch, etc. Same goes for the others too, if you don't like having that stuff on your chest rig/plate carrier.

Thoughts, comments, things to add?

Also, if any of you have a designated shotgun kit, post it up. Tell us how you like it, how you see you using it, etc etc.

You should carry the same that if you are using an AR/AK but with special pouches to contain the shells.

I'm using a vest similar to the blackhawk strike with 2 pouches to store 14 shells each, besides that I have an utility pouch, 2 9mm mag holder, the rip away condor IFAK, and a drop pouch.
Tomorrow I'll post some pictures...

Now I'm waiting for a girl that makes tactical stuff to sew me a few of these detachables side saddles, I think the idea is awesome
http://www.esstac.com/Products/7%20Round%20Shotgun%20Card.php

You can put 2 of those cards in a M4 mag pouch, so my idea is to get a double M4 mag pouch and carry 4 of those cards plus the one on the shotgun.

I must say, those are pretty damn neat. And with all the Velcro on stuff, you can have shells anywhere. Thanks for sharing mate.

great ideas in here... im just getting started on my system and i very well may use some of these ideas. im liking the velcro side saddle. it virtually eliminates a reload from your person to the gun.  cool shit guys  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

It's a great idea. First I've ever saw of it too. It opens up many more doors for a DS (Designated Shotgunner).

A realistic and frank question: Who would choose a shotgun as a primary? It is of limited (specialized) utility. Reference this thread for clarification on my stance:

Dave_M this has been discussed RE:  CA. Gun owners, where the shotgun has a tactical advantage over a nerfed out rifle (CA. AK/AR)

Or shitty countries with shitty laws like mine, where the only long weapon you can own is a shotgun or a bolt action rifle

BTW Dave_M, your thread about shotguns is really cool

I recently purchased one of those shotgun slings that have the loops for 25 12ga rounds. Loaded out its a bit to heavy and it swings too much. not a good buy. The only practical purpose i see for it is fully loaded on a baricade. Show of force type of thing. You may want to avoid those slings if your shoty is primary. on the up side. just having it fully loaded is ok for a grab n go. Who dosnt want to have another 25 rounds of 12ga.

im looking into and considering a light for my shotgun... im not really big on extra shit on my gear but perhaps a lights a decent idea. can anyone recommend a quality light mount ? one that ideally attaches to the magazine tube in some way.

Well the Surefire forends are the best IMO. There are other options but they are secondary

ok, these picture suck, I need to get a real camera...

I sewed some velcro to the vest so when I open the pouches the flap wont get in the way when I try to get a shell

See, what do you need a girl for if you can sew the shit yourself.  8)  Looks good!  Also, you can buy the bungee cord like was on that saddle for pretty cheap on ebay.  I bought a bunch a while back and STILL have a ton of it.

Because I'm lazy :D
Anyway I was thinking that you can buy a shotgun shells bandoleer, cut it into pieces, sew it some velcro and put it a paracord loop and you got it much cheaper

That's a pretty good idea man. I think that I might give that a try. Incorporate them with some AR mag pouches, and make basically the same thing as the SOE shell holder.

The thing I have always thought of as the best rig for the shotgun was the simple 50 round bandoleer.  Reasons...

1) for me the shotgun is a secondary long gun and if I'm using it and my rifle in some Hollywood zombie shootout I want to be able to put it over my rifle 2nd line.  Actually this really does matter at three gun matches  ;D

2) I think of the shotgun as a good primary to have while you save for that $1k rifle.  The shotgun is cheap- but it gets the job done.  The Walmart 50 round bandolere is cheap - but it gets the job done.

3) If the shotgun is coming out of the safe for real violence- it is in an HD situation.  The bandoleer is the quickest thing to put on.  I keep a bandoleer loaded with 00 buck on top 870 in the safe.

4) If one of my buddies is over and they don't have their primary I can hand them the shotgun and bandoleer quick - no sizing, no zeroing etc.

Just my thoughts, if your shotgun was your permanent primary you might want to rethink this.

I haven't built it yet as I'm finishing up my PIG plate carrier, but this is what I'll be building over the next 6 weeks or so:

1 - http://www.skdtac.com/Eagle_LE_Plate_Carrier_Cummerbund_p/eag.571.htm
1 - Center top: http://www.tacticaltailor.com/adminpouchenhanced.aspx
4 - Center bottom:  http://www.blackhawk.com/product/STRIKE-Shotgun-18rnd-Vertical-Pouch,1305,1392.htm
...along with my normal load out of utility pouches:
2 - Both sides toward rear:  http://www.blackhawk.com/product/STRIKE-Large-Utility-Speed-Clip-Pouch-wzipp,1313,55.htm
2 - Both sides toward front:  http://www.511tactical.com/All-Products/Bags-Backpacks/Pouches/66-Pouch.html

Supplemented with my Rem 870 w/ side saddle and speed feed stock, will give me a total load of 82 12-gauge rounds.

The nice part about this MOLLE setup is with 2 Blackhawk STRIKE AR magazine pouches...

http://www.blackhawk.com/product/STRIKE-AKM4-Mag-Pouch-Holds-6,738,1391.htm

...you can quickly change over to a rifle setup if need be and have 360 rounds of 5.56 at your disposal.

I use ALICE gear and pouches for all my gear load out. I use them for AR, AK and 12ga. The ALICE M16 pouches will carry 20 round AK mags and my 30 round mags I use AK pouches. I use zip ties for all the pouches, they are strong and will hold and make no noise.

If you take a few of the M16 pouches you can have a good load out for the shotgun. You can also use ziplock baggies put the shells in and turn it upside down. This will help keep water hurting the shells.

When ALICE gear is so cheap I see no reason to pay for high priced tac gear. You can use ALICE pouches with the tac stuff as well.
