Gun Oil's and Greases - Let the Debate Begin
« on: January 08, 2018, 03:17:18 PM »
I broke down my wife's AR today and cleaned it with Hoppes 9 solvent and then went looking for my Pro-Shot Pro-Gold Gun Grease to grease down the bolt and carrier group but couldn't find it where I left it.  >:D >:D >:D

Thinking I might try something else as that grease is hard to find I duckduckGo'd CLP.

You may ask, "why did you search for CLP when the grease/oil/bacon fat/etc I use is so much better." I remember once at a MVT training session some of the students rifles were freezing up and the range officer/trainer (Arron I think) kept squirting those rifles with CLP. He finally came up to my rifle when I was prone and he squirted by bolt with CLP.

I told him I didn't need it and he said, "sure you do. AR's like it sloppy". OK what ever.

Anyway back to today. I did a search and I found this interesting test that a forum member from AR15 did with a bunch of lubricants and I thought I would post it.

https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/-/7-485547/?

If you do not have time to read the two articles here are the top rated lubricants after a summer and winter test in no particular order:

Slip 2000 EWL,
BF CLP Collector,
BF CLP, and
Eezox.

Soooo, what is your favorite lube and or rust inhibitor? Let the  :shitStorm: begin

I tend to use whatever I can get my hands on. I have used most of the major brands available. I recently had a run with Frog Lube Extreme which worked well even on cold temps, but I would still be hesitant to use it in the 0deg temps we have had recently.  I actually had to go out and buy some lube recently. I purchased Slip EWL. Of the various lubes I have used across a wide array of temps here is the list of what I prefer.

Slip EWL
Breaktrough Battleborn Oil
Tetra Gun Grease
Lucas Gun Oil

I really need to hit SHOT to refill my stocks of Gun Lube.

On a side not I do also use Slip 2000 Cleaner/Degreaser in my Ultrasonics.

Favorite oil: Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic
Favorite grease: Lucas Red Marine
Favorite cleaner: Automatic Transmission Fluid mixed 50/50 with mineral spirits. A little vinegar in a patch for copper fouling.

Kerosene also works well as a solvent. Downsides are odor and flame.

I mostly use CLP.  I can vouch that it will keep an Uzi carbine and a Ruger MK II pistol functioning, even when it's -15F.  Occasionally I'll use Rem Oil, but I prefer CLP.  I've been hearing about a lot of folks using Mobil 1 on the AR's.  I've been planning on stocking up some Mobil 1 for my vehicles, I guess it would be a good idea to put some away for firearms too.  Plus Mobil 1 is probably cheaper than CLP!

I use wheel bearing grease. I used to douse my ar15 in lube but it really doesn't need much at all.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

Frog Lube

Grizz if you are storing your guns for long periods or if you are at all in cold environments use Frog Lube Extreme. It is much less likely to coagulate. I had very good luck with it for about a couple of years but in cold weather regular FL was less than ideal.
