Title: AR Mags
Post by: Veritas on October 27, 2011, 06:56:23 PM
What are the advantages/disadvantages between steel mags vs. aluminum mags?

Great question. I asked a similar question of a small arms trainer on contract in Afghanistan who is a friend of my brother and I. He told us this. "Go aluminum over steel every time because of: Rust, compass use, weight (9 mags on your vest- Steel vs. aluminum adds up) because every once is important.

Although he likes Magpul mags he cautioned us against them in a theater of war. I still own 10 and have had no failures as yet to date.

Never seen aluminum mags, so I am assuming they are cast?

If accurate, cast aluminum will crack if force is applied.  Standard AR mags are pressed steel and will only bend.

I would think that either material would require a great deal of effort to deform though.  If someone has one of each, send them my way and I'll put them in my press and give you the psi ratings if you like.

Great idea KiltPatriot. Also, for you AR Vs. AK guys, please send me one of each and I will run tests and let you know which is best.  :))

No, standard USGI mags are aluminum.

No idea... I always thought aluminum was the standard.

I like colts myself.

The USGI Aluminium Magazine is made of stamped sheet aluminium that is spot welded along the rib. I use them exclusively as I don't trust P-Mags and Steel Mags don't work.

What I mean by that is if you look at the follower in a steel vs. aluminium mag you will see that the follower on the steel mag doesn't ride in the rib. The follower isn't far enough into the rib so it won't engage the bolt hold open. Sucks don't it, couple that with the weight and the rust and its a not starter in my book.
