Title: Anyone know if Hex mags can be upgraded?
Post by: mfitzy111 on April 04, 2025, 10:05:13 AM
I was given 5 Hex mags, in pulling the bottom of these AR style mags I was told they are 10 rounders. (They have a standard 30 round mag body) The only difference I see is the spring, and a plastic insert. Just wondering if I pick up 5 springs and pull them apart will they work like standard capacity AR mags.

These are the mags I have - https://hexmag.com/hexmag-ar-15-m4-m16-magazine-series-2-10-rds/ (https://hexmag.com/hexmag-ar-15-m4-m16-magazine-series-2-10-rds/)

Hex type 2s and one type 1.

I helped someone out with a computer issue, and he knew someone in NJ that passed these on to him when the legal drama unfolded over the NY Safe act stuff. They figured at some point they would be illegal...so drama compelled them to unload and get rid of new mags.

in searching around I found these springs for $3.95 each.
https://www.johnmasen.com/AR15-M16-New-G-I-Made-30rd-Springs-p/1547.htm (https://www.johnmasen.com/AR15-M16-New-G-I-Made-30rd-Springs-p/1547.htm)   $6.95 gets springs and the alminum guide ...

I might just pull a beat mag I have laying around and see what happens when I pull the spring out and try it.  Ok- I managed to pull an old clunker mag, and pop the spring in. These Hex mags have a non standard top guide, and I removed the spacer and put the bottom floor plate back in. This seems to work.

anyone have experience in these hex mags being upgraded to let me know if they will actually be dependable?

...or are they to be set aside for cousin Ronnie for the end times?

I don't see why not mfitzy. Seems like a cheap experiment.

I agree with JM, it would be a cheap experiment.  Being in California I have had to be aware of the magazine restriction issues. Years ago I bought a couple of 10 rounders for both my 469 Smith and Beretta 92SB in case I decided to go to Nevada.  Why, you ask?  Because in the curious California system, I can legally own a 12 rd Smith mag when I leave the State for a day in Reno, but coming back I commit felony importation of illegal magazines.

I also bought a 5 rd mag for my Colt ARHBar in case I ran into someone with gentle sensibilities at the range. I have a retired Parole Officer friend who keeps his high cap mags in pieces so as not to be in violation, but he's a bit weird anyway.

Annually at retired qualification I carry whatever and my still active brothers have never cared.

Bottom line for me in California:  Be patient,  use your brain, have fun with your experiment.

Why change them?  Keep a couple around the house just in case authoritarians decide you need nothing more than those.  Then you can show them the old 10 round ones you have had forever and advise you are in full agreement.

Just be careful not to glance at the spot under the mattress when you say that.

Yes, They can be converted, but I woudnt waste my money on "upgrading" Hex Mags.  Leave them as is until they fail.

Possibly the worst AR style mags I have ever seen other than maybe Pro Mags.

I inadvertently bought 3 AR mags that are 10 rounds each a while back.  I thought about returning them but then thought cover story equipment.

So if the time ever comes I can show them to the man.

lol. yeah. that might be the right idea... they might be what you give to someone (like a cousin Ronnie) coming around when things go down because you don't want them wasting ammo also.

Good to know, I had no idea about quality, and I didn't buy them...they were 'donated' to me. :D Thankfully. Basically, I guess i'll hang on to them, but not waste money on them. Good info guys. Thank you.
