Upcoming DIY stuff
« on: December 14, 2014, 11:04:42 AM »
Hi All,

Sorry I have been a bit quiet as of late.

Bunches of things going on.

The DIY part of being a prepper is something near and dear to my heart. You see? A little bit of study and the willingness to give things a try will get you a long way.

So I would like to do a short intro to a few things that I believe are important.

1. Gasification - This is REALLY important to prepping. In short. Anything that can be burned can be gasified. What that means is that if you heat up burnable stuff (wood, plastic, Tires, Food waste and such) in a vessel without O2. It will gasify. The gas produced is called syngas. You can run a petrol engine on it. You can also make Diesel and Petrol from it by running it through a cooling tower. Look it up on Google and You Tube to see how. Really good stuff that is.

2. Don't buy - Build. Being a perpetual tight-wad I have built much of our prep stuff. Want a Small wood burning stove? Get some ammo cans and get to building. You don't need to be able to weld. An Angle Grinder, Drill, Rivets and bolts will get you there.

3. If you have to Bug-out and don't have an already built shelter at your BOL or don't have a BOL. I suggest you think about a Yurt. Don't buy one. Build it. Again look it up.

4. While firearms are GREAT, think about other means in addition. A good bow or crossbow will go a long way. Also think about your small game taking means. There is nothing wrong with a good air rifle. You can buy a huge amount of pellets for what you would spend on 22 LR. Just saying.

More to come since I have writers block ATM.

Oops,

I forgot to mention two items.

A slingshot with practice is one hell of a great tool for a prepper.

And take a few moments to look up the Sling Bow. Damn cool thing also.

As I understand it, shooting an arrow with a slingshot type propulsion device.

I actually really like the IDEA of a sling bow. Looking forward to making one in the new year (a bit broke right now).  Apparently the power of a half decent bow but a lot more compact. . . curious to see how the guys at the archery club react to a bolt in a slingshot.

Nice Topic

I grew up playing with a 'shepherds sling'  AKA sling.  I've brought down small game with creek stones - raccoons are the largest I brought down.  They are easy to make - my current favorite is a strand of woven sprectralite spear fishing line.  its the basket type not the 6 strand type.  I can hit a basket ball sized target with a 1 pound fishing weight at about 50 yards on a good day and I'm fat and old now.  it - like any skill - takes some practice but isn't a huge problem.  The most regular practice I ever got was when I had a Black Lab dog.  you can get some good range with a tennis ball :)  Ammo is cheap, you can make a sling out of 550 scrap.  nice to keep that knowledge in your back pocket.

here is a good starting point if you haven't looked into it.  http://www.slinging.org/

Another skill that comes in handy - netting or net making.  I've made simple nets - the odd hammock and cargo holders.  I can repair nets too - same skill set.  I learned how to do that when I was 10.  If you can lace your boots using a ladder lace, you have the skills needed.

Glad to see everyone pitching in on the thread.

Just remembered another really useful item. The humble cast net. Takes a bit of practice, yet has worked for centuries as a good means to catch fish.

That the one.

There are a bunch of how-to build one videos and blog posts. I made mine and used the black theraband tubes. I like thew idea of a bow strength arrow thrower on my wrist.

I used a variation of an atlatl (it had a different name, but darned if I can remember it) at a local festival.  On my first try I accidentally flung the arrow so far it couldn't be found again!  I wasn't even trying hard.  Those things can definitely pack a punch!
