I did a bunch of pictures and write up of how we have our chicken coop and run set up.  Thought you guys might find it interesting.

ThatGuy - not wrong at all. This is my longest post to date because I just love talking chickens. :)

JM, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Does it give you ideas? Do you currently have chickens?

Great write-up Wellie. It's always good to see how others manage their flocks.  I like the 2 x 4" roosting idea.  I cleaned out the coop last week, and I still need to clean out their pen, though I'm not looking forward to it.

To be quite frank Wellie, I put off buying chickens because I lacked the information in your newsletter from someone I trusted. Thanks

Now I have no excuse.

Side note.  Well semi side.  I have seen recent medical info regarding eggs and blood cholesterol.  Appears they have nothing to do with each other.  So grow the birds and eat the eggs.  Thats a good enough reason.

I have high cholesterol and take a statin.  Wife does not like fixing eggs (I love them) but she is getting more amenable since that news.

Jackalope - yeah, coop cleaning day is never the most fun, but it's something I only need to do every six to eight weeks.

JM - if you ever have questions about chickens let me know! I adore keeping them and talking about them. I'm not an expert, but I'd definitely say I'm in the intermediate category of knowledge. :)

Nemo - and if you're able to free-range or feed high quality feed supplemented by veggies and meal worms the nutrition stats go up! (Free-range being best, natch, though not possible for all of us, alas.)

I usually only let mine free range when I'm outside or my Great Pyrenees is there to guard them.  I lost a banty rooster a couple of weeks ago, probably to a fox.  He didn't get along with my older rooster, so he was allowed to free range full time.  Well he survived a year outside and inside our fences, even though he was encouraged to roost and stay with my other chickens.  I have an electric fence around my free range area, and then a tighter fenced enclosure within that area. Most four legged predators learn to avoid the electric fence and looks for easier pickings.  However, the predator that ate my banty rooster broke three fence posts, probably from receiving a shock. I also keep a goose ( affectionately known as Goosezilla) as another layer of defense. Chickens are great homestead animals, but they do require planning and physical work to maintain the flock.
