Title: Sewing lessons?
Post by: Well-Prepared Witch on July 03, 2016, 06:35:17 AM
Would anyone be interested in basic sewing tutorials? I've been thinking of putting some together as it's a very useful skill. But I didn't know if anyone would be interested.

I would love to expand my sewing skills.

I was taught to sew by my grandmother on a old Singer sewing machine. I was also taught stitches using a needle and thread.

Over the years I have made: Clothes, mended sails, made oodles of curtains, fixed clothes, made seat covers, et cetera.

Any help that I can give I will.

LOL Wellie! Nah, I will just fill in the blanks  ;)

When we lived on our sailboat during the second Seattle stint ('92-'96) the marina had a 120 Volt/hand crank sewing machine that you could borrow. I wish I could remember the name. Here (http://www.sailrite.com/) is a link to one though....

When I was a kid my mother made my sisters and I darn our own socks. One trick we were taught was to turn the sock inside out and put an old light bulb in it. This made it easier to make a neat seam.

When I was a kid the only thing I could do to socks was wear and destroy those darn things.  I would be most interested in watching/learning/participating in a class about that.

Cool.  I'll go ahead and do this, then.  Give me a couple weeks to figure out the best method (video, write up with pics, whatever) and put it together. :)

People learn by three different ways (http://www.worldwidelearn.com/education-articles/how-do-you-learn.htm).

I have facilitated hundreds of training sessions and if you can incorporate all three, your students will walk away with the knowledge you want them to walk away with.

Just a suggestion...

When I was lawyering I learned and used a 3 way idea to convince, teach and/or persuade people too.  Many others do this also and I suspect many here do it even if they don't call it what I do.

That is to get an audience and tell them what you will tell them.  Then tell them.  Then tell them what you told them.  Generally works pretty good.
