2017 - JohnyMac's Deer Stand
« on: November 22, 2017, 08:42:08 AM »
I have always wanted an elevated deer stand that is protected from the elements so I built one two weeks ago.

Started out looking for a plan on the internet and this is the one I went with. All in-all it was a good design however the next one I will build I will change up the dimensions slightly.

This is the company I went with for the corners which you use to insert the 4x4x8 treated feet in and build the base/floor of the stand on. When you buy through Home Depot (which I did) they are cheaper than what is offered direct from the company.

I used  a lot of extra wood and screws laying around but had to buy some too. My total cost was around $300- but if you had to buy everything from scratch it would probably run you $500-. It took me a total of 44 hours to build from the sinking of the first screw to the filming of the attached video's.

The house was built in my drive way and was put in place using my neighbors 95 Hp New Holland tractor using pallet forks. All of the tools and 4x4x8 posts and extra things were brought to site via my Kabota.

The toughest thing was leveling the structure when elevated and building the stairs. I originally was just going to use a ladder but I decided to do the stairs in the end.

Enjoy!

Nice now after the season you could camouflage it more for a lookout post.

Now you need to get a couple bushel of overripe apples to cover the new smell of the pressure treated wood and you coming and going.

Nemo, baiting deer and bear in Pennsylvania is illegal so putting out apples would be verboten.

JoJo, yeah it stands out like a sore thumb right now. A spring project will be to do camo it plus it will be weather by then. And you are right in that it could be a look-out of sorts.

I am not to worried about the deer getting use to it for  a few reasons.

1) I have put up ground blinds and the trail cameras that have shown that they are back within the blind within 24 hours.
2) After the first couple of days of deer season their will be hunters walking and driving in the woods. The deer will forget the blind
and while eluding the hunters will walk rights past.
3) The two week rifle deer season here in PA. is superseded by a month long flint lock season starting December 26th. In essence my deer season is 6-weeks long.  ;)

PS: Did the three viseos open for you? They do not on the shack computer for me.

Nemo, baiting deer and bear in Pennsylvania is illegal so putting out apples would be verboten.

You would not be baiting anything.  Its covering your scent and the treated wood scent and trying to plant a crop of apple trees for the spring.

You could convince the game warden of that if you try hard and get real lucky.

I noticed you have the blind guyed, is that because of the wind load?  Install a solar panel, and it could be your get away.  The videos all opened for me.  Nice Ford 8N!

LOL, Jackalope that is a Ford 9N engine with a 8N rear. We call it the Frankenstein Tractor. Hi, Hi.

Yes I did use guyed wires on the east & west side of the blind. Some plans suggest you use them and some say "never mind." If my brother uses the stand this year, he will be a lot more comfortable as he hates heights.

Basically each guy is 16' long in total and goes from a eye lag at the bottom of the platform/elevator brackets to a 4' long piece of re-barb and a turnbuckle. I put the turnbuckle on the re-barb and pounded it in at a 45' angle away from the blind. Once I got it in 3' or so I then tightened the turnbuckle till taught not tone tight. I used compression fittings to connect the wire in/to the eye lags.

After hunting season I will cut off the cross braces to be flush with the 4x4x8 posts.
