TRASH Post SHTF or Worse TEOTWAWKI
« on: July 31, 2024, 09:13:02 AM »
I think about weird things while laying in bed in the morning, things like,

> Is it raining out?
> What is on the work agenda today?
> Damn! I have that scheduled crown work tomorrow?
> Do I really want to get up?
> Better get up and make some coffee...and this morning
> Trash removal post the drama coming our way.

So what is your plan?

We have trash pickup once a week. You pay per bag so burn burnable's (no plastic), compost what we can compost and then what ever is left is picked up in the trash which is about 1/2 to 2/3 of one of those black trash bags.

What happens when your trash pickup is sporadic or worse, ends?

Share what you do or plan is. Heck, why invent the wheel right?

Compostables will be composted. Burnables will be burned. Recyclables will be recycled, i.e. metals. Otherwise, refuse will be buried.

LOL Felix

I do not know why however, I received a bit of pushback from my MAG on this post.

Living on 34 acres, trash will not be an issue as it isn't today; However, what about for you preppers in cities? Suburbia? Town settings?

Have you thought about trash? Septic? Heck, if you do not have a in ground septic system, how long will you be able to flush? H20 to flush. What about when the system backs up? It will, as most city systems need electricity to work. Maybe you will be fine but what about your non-prepping neighbors?

Now is the time to work this out not when it happens.

When I worked in some 'other' places, I saw first hand that the biggest killer of third worlders was:
1. Hygiene  (sewage + water supply are big killers.)
2. Other third worlders ( murder )

We of The West ( i/e Christendom ) have deep ingrained culture of infrastructure to haul away waste and to keep our water supply seperated.  Hence we live longer

Here at this tiny cottage, we have septic tank and field and several hundred feet away,  a deep well.  I really should set-up roof run-off water collection as well, then
Settling, Flocculation, Filtration and Chlorination. Projects...

Prepper or Survivalist ?

A Prepper keeps survival rations for his pets.

A Survivalist  keeps pets as survival rations.

I used to have a burn barrel but it rusted out to nothing. Then the County put a dumpster station a few miles away and I now carry my trash to the dumpsters. If the dumpsters get shut down, I'll just have to go back to burning my trash. 95% of my trash is burnable.

Both of our bugout locations have septic tanks and rainwater catchment systems. Also, both locations have seasonal springs.  One location has a composting toilet. My old QTH had an outhouse and I wouldn?t be opposed to building one at each location. I?ve experienced third world sanitation and it is a killer, and it can certainly can make you very sick (I know from experience). I?m hyper aware of the need to wash your hands.  One of the items that we have stocked heavy is soap, in all forms, i.e. dishwashing liquid, hand soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, bars of soap, etc. I figure it?ll make a good trade item too.

If no trash services are available, we will burn everything that will burn. Save aluminum, can be melted. Steel, tin and stuff would be collected and buried.

Glass -washed and reused.
Paper - resource, to be utilized according to type and condition
metal - ALL to be banked
sewage - as long as flush toilets work - easy (live out in National Forest, have well and septic)
as for irreplaceable TP, those nice fuzzy, dry cobs left from shelling will have to serve.   Always.   Grow.   Corn.
