Cotton balls saturated in petroleum jelly make great fire starters. You could put some in a little plastic baggie and keep them in your BOB or a couple in a homemade MRE bag.

i personally dont put mine in vasoline because that way i can use it as medical gear if i need to.

i feel the dual purposes out weighs the extra burn time

You could always have both. Have 4 or 5 even of the vaseline ones. The vaseline ones would hold up better in wet conditions.

We take old egg cartons (not the foam ones), and shredded paper (old bills work great!), and add enough of the shredded paper in each egg hole, pour melted wax in each, let them dry and cut apart. Great firestarters.

Yeah, those egg carton ones, I've seen them on Youtube, but I think they used dryer lint and wax.

Yeah, that'll work too. There is some satisfaction taking old bills (or current ones, for that matter), shredding them and lighting them on fire.

That would almost be better than having fire. LOL!
